I like your site. A good read and very informative.
A couple of thoughts, regarding the lightsabers: It has always been my personal thought that the idea behind the lightsaber was from Arthur and the Knights of the roundtable mythology. Granted its not an exact rip from the Arthurnian ledgend but if you think about the mythology of Excalibur I think you can pick out similarities. Also Jedi Knights=Knights of the roundtable (sort of). I think that Lucas probably wanted something similar to a sword in concept but because his story was set in the future with lasers and such an archaic sword would not do, so he kicked it up a notch and made it a laser sword.
Also I was rewatching Forbidden Planet last night and I can't believe how much Lucas ripped from this movie. For example when the Id creature is breaking into the power room is almost an exact duplicate of the doorway and effects in EP1 when Qui Gon is using his lightsaber to cut through the blast doors on the blockade ship.
Also if you look at the original theatrical for Forbbiden Planet it uses the same yellow scrolling text that fades off into the distance for its titles. The angle is not as extreme but I think the influence is readily apparent.
Check it out. I have some pics here:
