www.jitterbug.com/origins/lotr.html contains a list of analogies between LOTR and star wars. I thought the list is missing some interesting analogies: LOTR: The ring is tempting. Star Wars: The dark side is tempting. LOTR: Isildur is tempted to use the ring, with terrible consequences. His descendant, Aragorn, tries to fix his forfather's mistake, but first he must fight the same temptation. Star Wars: Annakin is tempted to use the dark side, with terrible consequences. His son, Luke, tries to fix his father's mistake, but first he must fight the same temptation. LOTR: Gollum, once a hobbit, is distorted by the ring. In the end he saves the day by throwing (accidentaly) the ring to the fire of mount doom, and dies along with it. Star Wars: Darth Vader, once a good man, is distorted by the dark side. In the end he saves the day by throwing (on purpose) the emperor to the abyss, and dies shortly after.

ssjkamui: I agree, Lucas probably got the word "Endor" from Tolkien. Tolkien probably got it from the Old Testament: Endor (literally "fountain of Dor") is the place where King Saul goes to consult a witch. This is especially notable because usually the heroes of the Old Testament are strongly opposed to witches and wizards, who have magical powers obtained from celestial beings other than God. King Saul "had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land": he had the wizards & witches exiled. Then when Saul was afraid of the army of Philistines and didn't know what to do, he asked God, but God did not answer. So he decided to consult the "Witch of Endor." It's probably the only part of the Bible which seems to at least partially advocate witchcraft. 1Sa 28:7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. p.s. - Crosswalk.com is absolutely my favorite Bible study tool: bible.crosswalk.combest, Kristen
