On June 6th 2014, I watched several documentaries about the D-Day landings. In one, there was a brief clip of a U.S. prototype amphibious jeep. It was the spitting image of a sandcrawler! (Without the treads.) Lucas must've seen this footage and had the sandcrawler designed to match. I have a web site with tons of World War 2/Star Wars parallels. Just google Star Wars and World War 2, you'll find it. I believe you'll be surprised.
